Why Most Businesses Fail (And How to Make Sure Yours Doesn’t)
The truth is, it’s not about working harder—it’s about working smarter, using data to drive strategic growth.
Most Businesses Don’t Fail Because of a Bad Idea
Four out of five businesses will fail. It's a sobering statistic—and a wake-up call. But the real reasons businesses collapse aren’t always what you think. It's not usually because of a bad offer or poor marketing. It's because most businesses aren't built on a foundation of data-driven decisions.
Without tracking and evaluating what's working and what’s not, it’s like trying to drive blindfolded and hoping you’ll magically reach your destination. The good news? You don’t have to stay stuck in the cycle of guesswork and overwhelm. You can make small, strategic changes that create real momentum.
Let’s break down the four core reasons most businesses struggle—and what you can start doing today to build sustainable growth.
1. Strategic Whiplash: Stop Guessing and Start Refining
One of the fastest ways to stall your business is through "strategic whiplash"—constantly pivoting to the newest trend you see online. One day it’s webinars, the next it's challenges, then it’s daily reels. Without clear data, you’re guessing and reacting instead of proactively building.
Instead of chasing every new idea, commit to one offer, one marketing strategy, and one conversion method for the next 90 days. Track what’s working. Refine based on data, not boredom or social media FOMO. Momentum comes from focus, not constant change.
Simple starting point: track these three metrics—
Where are your leads coming from?
What gets them to opt-in?
What converts them into paying clients?
2. Avoiding the Numbers: Start Facing Your Data
If you're avoiding your business numbers because they feel uncomfortable, you’re not alone. But ignoring your data doesn't make the problem disappear—it just keeps you stuck.
Data isn’t emotional. It's just information. It’s feedback you can use to improve and grow.
Set aside 5–10 minutes once a week to review key stats: traffic sources, opt-in conversions, and client conversions. A simple Google Sheet is all you need to start. Over time, those numbers will become your roadmap, not your enemy. When you face your data, you take back your power.
3. Waiting Too Long to Adjust: Treat Business Like an Experiment
Too many entrepreneurs wait months—or even years—to evaluate what’s working. But your business should be treated like a living experiment. The faster you assess and adjust, the faster you grow.
Missed your webinar goals? Great. What can you tweak? Poor email open rates? Awesome. What subject lines could you test? Low sales page conversions? Perfect opportunity to refine your messaging.
Small shifts—not massive overhauls—are what create real results. Build the habit of monthly reviews: What’s working? What’s not? What’s one small adjustment you can make today?
4. Running on Hustle Instead of Clarity
Hustle culture teaches us to stay busy—but busyness isn’t progress. Without clarity, hustle just leaves you exhausted with little to show for it.
True growth comes from knowing your priorities and taking intentional action. Each morning, ask: What one task will move me closer to my goal today? Each evening, reflect: What did I accomplish?
When you lead with clarity instead of hustle, you focus on what matters most—and your results compound over time.
The Shift That Changes Everything: Data Over Drama
Here’s the simple truth:
Stop guessing. Start tracking.
Stop chasing. Start refining.
top avoiding. Start adjusting.
Stop hustling. Start leading with clarity.
Business doesn’t have to be chaotic. You don’t need to work harder—you need to make smarter, more informed decisions. And it all starts with data.
Ready to take the first step? Open a Google Sheet today and track just one metric. That’s it. Momentum doesn’t come from overwhelm—it comes from strategic, consistent action.

Amy Traugh (Amy Traugh)
Four out of five businesses will fail. That's a sobering statistic. So why does this happen so often? And how can you, as a solopreneur, beat the odds?
Most people blame failure on the obvious. They ran out of money. Their marketing didn't work. Their offer wasn't good enough.
While those can all be factors, they're usually symptoms, not the root cause. The real issue? Most businesses aren't built on a strategic foundation of data-driven decisions.
It's not typically that the idea wasn't good. It's that the business wasn't built. To grow strategically. And without data to drive your decisions, you're basically driving blindfolded, hoping you'll magically end up at your destination.
So if you're tired of feeling stuck, unsure what's working, or just exhausted from trying all of the things, grab your coffee, grab a notebook, and let's dig in to what's really going on and how to fix it.
Today, I am breaking down four reasons why businesses really struggle, and more importantly, what to do about it starting today.
Okay, the first reason we get sucked into is what I like to refer to as strategic whiplash. This is the endless cycle of guessing and chasing.
It's making decisions based on what you're seeing others do in the online space, rather than looking at your data.
It is so common and typically starts with the best intentions. You see someone talk about their 20K webinar launch, and suddenly you find yourself mapping out a webinar.
Then someone else you see online swears by a five-day challenge she just ran. So what do you do? You pivot again and build a five-day challenge.
You see that someone else made $100,000 with her launch strategy and think, well, maybe I should try that too.
Everyone says that reels are working, so let's go all in on reels, post one every single day and see what happens.
But here's the problem with guessing. You risk pouring your time and your energy into things that might work. Thank you.
Crossing your fingers and hoping that they do. And when they don't, you end up pivoting again and again and again.
And in this never-ending quest of chasing shiny objects, you end up being reactive instead of proactive. Making choices based on what you think should work.
Based on someone else's success. Based on their highlight reel rather than what's actually working right now in your business.
This is almost like trying to bake a cake without measuring any of the ingredients. Just tossing in whatever ingredients seem to fit in the moment.
Sometimes you get lucky. But more often, if you're anything like me and I don't have a recipe, I would end up with a whole mess.
Recently, I was working with a client who was showing up so consistently. She was posting over on Instagram daily, sharing stories she had on...
Awesome lead magnet, but she wasn't getting the sales that she knew were possible. And when we dug into the numbers, we saw that 80% of her traffic was actually coming in from a podcast interview she did months ago, not her social media posts.
So she was spending all this time creating content that wasn't actually converting. But once we shifted her focus to building more partnerships, strategically guesting on other Align podcasts, repurposing that content, her flow of leads became consistent within a month.
This is the power of data. It removes the guesswork and helps you work smarter, not harder. So I challenge you for the next 90 days, pick one marketing strategy.
One offer and one conversion method. Just one. And stick with it for 90 days. Then refine it based on the data.
Not based on how bored you are or what you see everyone else doing on social media. This is how sustainable growth happens.
Not from hopping from strategy to strategy giving you that strategic whiplash. But from refining what's already working and making it better.
Because when you're always switching you're never giving anything long enough to actually work or gather real data. This is exhausting.
And this is why so many entrepreneurs are feeling stuck even though they're constantly working. So start by tracking just three things.
Where are your leads? It's coming from, this is our top of funnel, traffic sources, discoverability, then what gets them to opt in, the content, the lead magnet, what is working, and then what is converting them into clients?
This is our sales activity. That's it. Don't overthink this. A simple Google Sheet is more than enough to track these metrics.
The goal here is clarity, not complexity. You don't need to do more. You need to do what works better because when you stop guessing and stop chasing, you start creating real momentum.
Reason number two that four out of five businesses will fail is that you're avoiding the numbers. And this one is a biggie because I know.
That looking at numbers can feel uncomfortable. We get so much data drama swirling around in our heads, especially when they don't look the way we want them to.
But avoiding your data just because you're afraid of what it might say is like avoiding your scale when you're trying to lose weight and improve your health.
Not stepping on it doesn't mean your weight's not changing. It just means you're choosing to avoid the objective data at hand.
And what I tell my clients all the time is that your data is not here to judge you. It is simply feedback.
Feedback is power. So how can we use this feedback to power our business, to leverage the power of the data?
Start by blocking out a couple minutes each week. I do it on Fridays. And just look at your statistics that we were coming or that we were talking about in our last point.
Where are or or we're we're we're Here we Where the leads coming from, what's getting them to opt-in, and what is converting them to clients?
Remember, consistency matters more than complexity. We want to make this a habit because the more familiar you get with your numbers, the less intimidating they become.
They lose that scary feeling and give you back control. Reason number three, not adjusting fast enough. Your business is nothing more than an experiment.
So I challenge you, if you find yourself getting into your head, adopt the mindset of a scientist. What do I mean by this?
It means embracing curiosity. So say you did a webinar, and it was a total flop. Well, instead of getting in your head going, well, nobody wants
That's what I have to sell. Webinars suck. We're going to flip that mindset and go, okay, cool. This is just information.
It flopped. All right. What can we do different next time? Did my email open rates drop or are my subscribers unsubscribing?
Okay, cool. This is just information. What can I do differently? How can I serve those that are already there?
How can I adjust those subject lines in order to improve the open rate? But what ends up happening is so many entrepreneurs are waiting until next quarter, next year to evaluate what's actually working, leading to so many missed opportunities.
So a better approach would just be that simple check-in each month to ask yourself, what's working? What's not? What's one small adjustment I can do to do more of what's working?
And less of what's not. So maybe, for example, your sales page isn't converting. Instead of scrapping your entire offer suite, maybe it's just the messaging on one section that's off.
Maybe it's just where your calls to action are placed. Maybe it's the color of your call to action button.
Or maybe your emails, if they're not getting opened, you could just try a different subject line. Do some split testing before you assume that your audience isn't interested.
These small shifts can save you time. You're not failing. You're simply getting feedback. And feedback is fuel for your business growth.
And number four, running on hustle instead of clarity. Let's talk about the hustle culture we live in. You know, how often have you gone through your day and at the end of the day, when you're done, you go, why did I actually get done today?
If you felt this way, please know you're not alone. We're busy being busy. And because we're busy, it gives us the illusion of progress because we're focused on smaller, less important goals.
It's a whole dopamine cycle. We get that instant gratification and then we end up wearing busy like a badge of honor.
But the reality is, is busy is just activity without direction. Clarity is what creates results. Clarity comes from knowing what matters most, what's working, what's not, and focusing your energy there because that scattered focus leads to scattered results.
So what you can do is in the morning, take a minute and focus your attention and ask yourself, what is one thing that I can do today that will move me towards the goal I am trying to achieve?
And then at the end of the day, take the time to look at what you actually got done. And this is a really powerful exercise because so often we don't give ourselves enough credit.
I'm guilty of this, 100%. We're in the habit of seeing what we didn't do. But when we shift the lens to what did I accomplish, this keeps your work intentional.
This helps you stay focused on what's actually going to create the results. Clarity keeps you grounded and hustle keeps you busy.
The best part is that you get to choose. And we're not looking at this from a judgmental perspective. If you find yourself, oh my gosh, today I spent three hours scrolling on Instagram.
Guess what? Now you have the awareness so you can make the choice to make the change. So let's recap the real reason most businesses will fail and what to do about it.
I want you to stop guessing and start tracking. Stop chasing, focus and refine. Stop avoiding, face your numbers. Stop delaying, adjust quickly.
Stop hustling, lead with clarity. Business does not have to feel so chaotic. And when you start tracking your data and make decisions based on data, you stop second guessing yourself and you start growing with intention.
And if you are ready to make more strategic and formal decisions to grow your business, I invite you to take that first step today.
Open that. Google Sheet. Start tracking just one metric. That's it. Get into action. You don't need to work any harder.
You just need to start leveraging the power of data in your business. If you are ready to turn your data into dollars and grow your business with clarity, confidence, and ease, make sure you head on over to amytraugh.com to get started for free.
