You Don’t Have to Be the Best, You Just Have to Be Consistent When Business Slows

Why showing up consistently beats chasing perfection (and what it really takes to grow your business).

Consistency Outperforms Talent (Every Time)

When you’re stuck in a cycle of comparing yourself to others, it’s easy to believe that success is reserved for the most polished, most experienced, or most well-connected entrepreneurs.

But that’s just not true. The ones who grow sustainable, profitable businesses aren’t always the most skilled or well-known.They’re simply the ones who keep showing up.

In this episode of The Metrics Maven Podcast, we’re cutting through the noise and pressure to be “the best,” and focusing on what actually grows your business: consistent, imperfect action.

The myth of needing to be the best

If you’ve ever delayed launching something because it wasn’t “ready” or you didn’t feel like the expert yet—you're not alone. But waiting until you're the best at what you do? That just slows you down. Your audience doesn’t need perfect. They need you—honest, consistent, and relatable.

Why consistency is the real strategy

The business owners who grow? They’re the ones who keep showing up even when:

  • They're not getting immediate engagement

  • They're unsure if it's “working”

  • They're in a slow season

  • They're battling self-doubt or imposter feelings

They don’t stop and start. They build consistency into their systems so they can show up without it always depending on how motivated they feel that day.

What people really remember

Your audience isn’t keeping a tally of how “perfect” your content is. They’re not judging your hair, background lighting, or how well-spoken you were on video. What they do notice? Your consistency. Your reliability. The way you make them feel safe and seen because you're there when you say you’ll be.

What to do instead of chasing perfection

  • Create content that solves a real problem for your audience

  • Stick with one core message instead of constantly changing directions

  • Get visible in ways you can repeat (and even automate)

  • Build habits and systems to reduce decision fatigue and keep showing up

Final Thought

You don’t have to be the best. You just have to be consistent.

That’s what builds trust. That’s what builds brand recognition. And ultimately? That’s what leads to business growth.

So if you’ve been waiting until you feel more ready, more experienced, or more confident, this is your nudge: Start now. Stay steady. And let consistency be your competitive advantage.

@0:04 - Amy Traugh (Amy Traugh)

Have you ever hit a slow season in your business and thought, nothing's working? Maybe I need a new offer.

Maybe my pricing's off. Maybe it's my messaging. Should I pivot? Maybe I just need to burn it out all down and start fresh.

This is such a defeating feeling, especially when things were going really well. And then out of nowhere, the momentum that you have gained seems to come to a screeching halt.

Your DMs go quiet, your sales slow down, your engagement is flat, and suddenly you're questioning everything. I've been there too.

Actually, I'm willing to bet that we all have. But slow seasons are not a sign that something's wrong with you.

or your business. They don't mean that your business is broken. They don't mean you're falling behind. And they definitely don't mean that you're not cut out for this.

They are a part of the rhythm of entrepreneurship. Everyone goes through them, even if not everyone is talking about it.

And this is a lesson that took me way too long to learn. What really matters isn't if slow seasons happen, because they will.

But it's more about what you do when they do happen. Because the way you respond during these slower seasons will either keep your momentum going or send you right back to square one.

And that's exactly what we're talking about today in this episode. I'm sharing some of... The simple shifts, actually the one simple shift that has really helped me stay grounded and keep the momentum going during the slow seasons and how you can use your existing data to lean in and grow your business and escape that season faster.

So if you've ever felt the urge to pivot or burn it all down when it feels like you've lost all of your momentum, this one is for you.

So let's get into it. On social media, it looks like everyone else is crushing it 24-7, right? Six-figure launches, sold-out programs, DMs overflowing with ideal clients.

I just signed another dream client on repeat. We see it all the Time, it's the highlight reel of business, but no one's really talking about the slower seasons of business, the silent launches, the months where you hit a record low in monthly revenue, and the days where you're just contemplating like, would it be easier to just go back to a nine to five job?

So when your calendar gets quiet, what happens is we start to spiral. And this is so easy to do.

We start thinking, what am I doing wrong? Or do I even know what I'm doing? And like I said earlier, it's so important that I repeat it because we all need this reminder over and over and over.

Every business is going to have slow seasons. They're just that. They are seasons. And your business is not exempt.

None of ours are. This is not a matter of if you will have a slow season, rather when. Why?

Because we're human. We're not machines and neither are our clients. Life happens, season shifts, buying patterns evolve, energy ebbs and it flows.

And depending on your industry, your ideal clients might naturally be more active during certain times of the year than others.

For example, if you're working with moms, things might slow down for you during the summer because they are in survival mode.

Their normal routine is thrown off. Some people, the holidays are just a really busy time for them. Some people take the time to unplug and they're not buying right now.

And this is where metrics are so helpful because it lets you. So you see these patterns over time. So then instead of getting stuck in your head, you're like, oh, summer's always a slower month for me.

So you can start to get curious and bridge that gap of maybe you throw out a newer, easier offer for the summer months.

Maybe you double down during those months that are really busy to make them even higher profit-wise. So none of this that's happening in the background means that you're failing.

It just means you're in business. And the sooner we can normalize this, the less time we end up wasting, beating ourselves up, and making impulsive decisions from a place of fear.

Because if you're assuming that every month needs to look like your best month ever, I hate to break it to you, but you're going to constantly feel behind, even when you're on track.

And this is where I see time and time again, business owners getting stuck. Things slow down. They're going to.

But what happens is suddenly they're convinced that they need to start over and pivot. New offer, new audience, new niche, new platform, new content strategy.

And while yes, sometimes a pivot is necessary, but most of the time you're not actually starting from scratch because your business is broken.

You're starting from scratch over and over and over and pivoting because you didn't pause long enough to figure out what was already working.

And this is a vicious cycle. It drains your energy. eats up your time and it keeps you in a loop where you're constantly chasing the next thing instead of building momentum.

It's so exhausting. I see brilliant entrepreneurs do this. All the time with strategies that were working, but they pivoted because they didn't give them enough time to gather the data, to refine.

They shifted and pivoted because they assumed that the quiet meant failure. Sometimes a slow season isn't a sign that it's anything to do with your strategy.

It could be a normal part of your sales cycle. It could be a sign that your audience is processing.

Maybe you've got a new influx of followers into your world and they need time to process, to think. They're in decision-making mode.

So instead of scrapping the whole thing, your whole business, get curious. Stay consistent and give your strategy room to breathe.

This is where data is such a powerful asset. I want you to look at your metrics. What's actually getting clicks?

What content is being saved? What offers are drawing in those warm leaves, even if they're not converting yet? Because every time you pivot, you interrupt the momentum that you're trying to create.

Consistency compounds, but only if you give it time to. Okay, so say you're in a slow season. You've taken a breath.

You're not panic pivoting. Now what? This is where I want you to get really curious and shift into detective mode.

I want you to channel. That inner three-year-old that says, why, why, why, when my kids were growing up, that stage drove me insane.

But we can actually lean into that and use it for our advantage because I promise you, even when it feels like nothing is working, something is.

And that something is your starting point. It is your clue. And that is where you can focus, not in fixing everything, not in doing all of the things or creating another offer, but in following the trail of breadcrumbs, following the traction that you already have.

Because when you take a step back and get curious, you can see the bigger picture and you will find clues.

Even if your revenue is down, even if your engagement is zero, even if. Your sales are slower than usual because there is always something that is working.

But you won't see what's working when you're stuck in reactive mode. So this is your invitation to pause and ask yourself, what is still getting engagement?

Clicks, comments, saves. What offers or emails are generating interest? What freebie are people downloading? How are they getting into my world?

What past clients are referring people my way? You know, we forget about how powerful that is. Checking in with our past clients.

I have it literally built in my sales cycle. That once the current cohort of my signature program, Metrics Mastery, closes.

That I literally go back in and check in with. Every single past graduate of the program and past one-on-one client I have, yes, it takes a little bit of time, but I will tell you what, just genuinely being interested and checking in with them, I can't even begin to tell you how much revenue that has created because what it does is it just naturally reopens the conversation.

And it is so much easier to sell to someone who has already purchased from you, who has already gotten the transformation, who has already seen how amazing you are.

And even, I don't even worry about the sale. I just genuinely show up like a human because I'm interested in their success.

I want to see that client continue to win. I am just a part of the process, but what the real

The cool thing that this does is it keeps you top of mind. So even if that client doesn't need more support from you right now, it keeps you top of mind.

Because now when she's having coffee with her friend, it's like, you know what? I'm really struggling with this thing.

Well, guess what? I know someone who has the solution to the problem that you have. It's brilliant. And these are the signals, the really quiet signals that we're missing.

It's right in front of us and we're missing it because we're hyper-focused on what's not working. And it's primal.

It's survival. It's just how our brain is wired. But when you start noticing these patterns, this is when things get so interesting.

Because now you're making informed decisions based off of your metrics. know. a little do It's Where the gaps are in your business, not emotional ones.

So let me give you an example because I see this all the time with clients. I had a client who came to me and she was in full on panic mode.

We were talking like, I'm ready to burn it down. Like all of the business is down. I don't know what to do next.

Her engagement had dipped. Her sales were flat. And she was convinced that she needed to completely revamp her offer suite.

She was ready to literally toss everything out the window and start fresh. But when we looked at her metrics, we saw something really interesting.

Her website traffic had actually increased over the past 30 days. But none of it was converting. And it was because there was a broken link.

The traffic was there. Her audience was interested. She was. wasn't meeting them with the right step, the next right step, because of a tech issue.

So, simple adjustment, sales started coming in again. Not because she was doing more, not because she went through another launch, but she got curious.

She looked at what was working, made a few small pivots. Well, not even pivots, strategic decisions based off of her metrics.

So the next time you're feeling tempted, I call it panic pivoting. I want you to take a breath, zoom out, and ask yourself, what is working right now?

What is whispering? Hey, hey, attention to this, because this is the exact thing that will help carry you. Through the slow seasons and set you up for a stronger, more sustainable next chapter.

And this is why metrics are crucial to your success. They help take the emotion out of business and give you something solid to stand on when your brain is trying to convince you that nothing's working.

Metrics will help you stay grounded and make decisions that lead to business growth. And instead of those reactive panic pivots that leave you right back where you started, there's a few things that you can dive into and look at from a metric standpoint.

First thing I want you to look at is your content metrics. We're not talking follower counts. I want you to be curious and actually look at which posts are people engaging with?

Are people coming to your... Website, via social media, was it the podcast? Was it a freebie that you have?

It's really interesting because sometimes the content that gets the least engagement is actually the one driving things behind the scenes.

So don't look at just surface level performance. Dig even deeper. And a really good way to do this is by using UTMs.

And that's something we talked about way back in a few episodes ago, and I'll drop the link in the show notes for you.

But start looking and getting curious. Dive deeper. And the next place I want you to look at is your website.

So if you have a website, which you don't need, but if you do have this available, look at what...

What people are actually clicking on. Because a lot of times you can be surprised. Is your most downloaded freebie still actually generating leads?

Is there a sales page that keeps getting traffic even though you haven't talked about it? Again, lean into it.

Lean into what's already working because this is a clue that tells you something is resonating right there. Another metric that you can look at is just conversations.

Who are you talking with right now? Who's in your DMs? Because maybe they're not buying right now, but they're asking questions.

They're getting curious. They're replying back to your prompts and your emails. They're on the edge. They're really aware of what you do.

But you can double down here nurturing them. Not with pressure, but just again, being a human. With Consistency, so you remain top of mind.

And then the last one, we talked about this earlier, is referrals and returning clients. Are past clients referring to people?

Have clients worked with you once and then book again later? This is the signal that your offer delivers value.

And so often we overlook this indicator of long-term stability. Now, don't just notice what's working. So yes, we want to become aware.

That is step one. But the most important thing is to lean into it. Double down on what's working. Because when you're in a slow season, it is so easy to start chasing new strategies.

But growth comes from going deeper. To what's already resonating, what's already working for your business, not going wider with a million new things.

So if your email open rates are strong, write more emails. If people are DMing you about one particular topic, create more content around that.

If your freebie is getting downloads, talk about it more. Add a follow-up sequence. Connect the dots to your paid offer.

Let your metrics guide you toward momentum because your metrics are clues. They are nothing more than clues that will show you what is already working so that you can stop guessing your way through business and start making confident and strategic decisions for your business.

Metrics are the custom strategy that you have been searching for in a world of cookie cutter strategy. And when you lean into what is working, you give yourself space to grow your business with clarity, confidence, and ease.

Even when it's quiet, even during the slow season, you don't need to panic pivot. You just need clarity into what's already working because the goal isn't to avoid the slow seasons of business.

Remember, they're a part of the cycle. They will happen. It is inevitable. But the goal is to know exactly what to do when they do show up.

So what if you began accepting the slow seasons as a part of the cycle of business and used it as an opportunity to lean in, observe, reflect, and make strategic decisions?

This is what sets you Sustainable businesses apart. The ones that last aren't the ones that never slow down. They are the businesses that know exactly what to do when it does.

So I have a challenge for you. The next time things slow down, instead of spiraling out of control into nothing's working, I challenge you to pause and ask yourself, what is working right now?

And how can I build on that? And if this episode resonated with you, this is exactly what I love helping clients with inside my signature program, Metrics Mastery.
